From the Rector: Claiming Pentecostal Gifts
For centuries the Church has taught that there were basically seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, derived from a passage in the eleventh chapter of Isaiah. A common listing of the seven includes wisdom (to know what God expects of us and how to move forward), understanding (to be able to discern right from wrong, to hear God), counsel (to know what should be done and how to do it), fortitude (to be strong and filled with the confidence of God), knowledge (to know the Word of God), piety (to be able to put our knowledge into practice and live rightly with God), and fear of the Lord (not so much to be terrified by God, but to be awe-struck by God, to be capable of being awed by God). Each of the seven spirits is so rich that it’s no wonder that church tradition has handed them down. They are good gifts to memorize and to meditate upon.
There is a Christian formation program for children that has a special presentation for the Day of Pentecost. Especially on this day, the children are reminded of the candle they are given at their baptism. The idea is that, especially at Pentecost, we remember the light we receive at baptism, and we give thanks for it. We also carry that light into the world, empowered and enabled by the various gifts of the Holy Spirit. In the presentation for the children, seven red candles are lit and each one is labeled for one of the gifts of the Spirit. The children are then invited to think about which of the seven gifts they might most need. If they could ask God for one of those gifts, which one would it be? Finally, the children go to the candle that represents their prayer and they light their baptismal candle from that candle. The session closes with a prayer asking God to strengthen and encourage the light each of us carries into the world.
If we were to join those children in their candle-lighting, for what gift would we ask? What could you use more help with? What aspect of your own light would you ask God to increase or inflame or enliven? Would it be wisdom or understanding? Would it be counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, the fear of the Lord—or something else entirely?
On this Day of Pentecost and in the season that follows, let us be aware of the light of Christ that burns in each of us, and let us ask the Holy Spirit for the gifts we might need to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. John Beddingfield

Help those in Myanmar . . . Episcopal Relief and Development is responding to Cyclone Nargis, providing churches and individuals with an opportunity to help those affected by this deadly disaster. In the low-lying Irrawaddy River Delta, entire villages were inundated by a 12 foot wall of water. More than 5,000 square kilometers in this region are still under water, destroying the vital rice crop and much of the country’s agricultural and fishing industry. Officials fear the death toll could rise dramatically once the damaged areas are more accessible. Contaminated water, food shortages, and deadly diseases are likely to cause additional suffering in days to come. To help people affected by the cyclone in Myanmar, please make a donation to Episcopal Relief and Development’s “Myanmar & Cyclone Response” online at http://www.er-d.org/ or call 1-800-334-7626, ext. 5129. Gifts can be mailed to: Episcopal Relief and Development “Myanmar & Cyclone Response” P.O. Box 7058, Merrifield, VA 22116-7058.
All Souls Picnic . . . Save Sunday, June 1, 2008 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for the All Souls parish picnic in Rock Creek Park. Details and directions will be available closer to the date.
A List of Eligible Voters . . . for parish elections at the Annual Meeting on May 18 is posted in the narthex and the Undercroft. Please check the list and see that your name is included. Though the official date for including names on this roster has passed, the Vestry can meet and add names if necessary. If you are not listed on the posted roster, please contact the parish office.
Cookies for Children . . . During the month of May it will be our turn to provide cookies for the children at the Episcopal Center for Children. Please bring homemade or store-bought cookies to the parish kitchen, make sure they are plainly marked, Episcopal Center for Children, and place them in the marked receptacle. If you have questions, please speak with Merriam Woodhouse.
When were you baptized? . . . In an effort to reconcile the parish records, we’re looking for baptism dates for many of our parishioners. If you know that you were baptized but have no idea as to the particulars, then see Robin Jones in the Undercroft on Pentecost (May 11). She will have a calendar and will invite you to find a feast day in your first year of birth, and we can call that your baptismal day.
The Adult Forum this Sunday, May 11 at 10:00 a.m., “Healing Ministries,” is led by Landis Vance, who will help us think about what it means to be involved in ministries of healing and wholeness.
Readings for the Daily Office come from the lectionary in the back of the Book of Common Prayer. Psalms are traditionally read according to the headings in the Prayer Book corresponding to the day of the month.
