September 15, 2019: Called to Move On

By Mother Cameron

As someone who has spent most of her adult life working in schools, first as a science teacher and now as a chaplain, I think September feels more like the beginning of a new year than January does. Each year, as summer vacation comes to an end, I spend time considering what will be different in the coming school year. This year, I have discerned that it is time to make a change in my Sunday call. As much as I love All Souls and the people here, I have determined that God is calling me to serve a new parish. My last day at All Souls will be September 22.

Five years ago, fresh out of seminary, I joined All Souls as an assisting priest. You, the parishioners of All Souls, have taught and supported me as I have learned, and grown, and developed as a priest. I am a better preacher, presider, pastor, and priest because of my time here. I am so grateful. While I do not yet know where I will serve next, I do feel called to be challenged and stretched in new ways as I use the gifts that you at All Souls have helped me to develop. Over the coming months I will visit parishes, talk to rectors, and, of course, pray. Please keep me in your own prayers as I listen and discern where and what God is calling me to next. And, since this change is only to my Sunday worshiping community, and I will remain in DC and at National Cathedral School, I will undoubtedly continue to see you at diocesan events and special occasions, and I look forward to that.

What I’ll miss about All Souls (other than the people, of course!) is this beautiful and deeply spiritual building. I love the stonework outside, especially against the green of the gardens. I love the peacefulness of the church when I enter early on Sunday mornings. I love looking for details in the stained glass windows and noticing how the light shining through them changes over the course of a year. And in the spring, I love hearing the loud chirping of birds as we celebrate Mass.

Thank you for allowing me to be a priest in your midst. I have loved being a part of this community. Know that I will miss you, and that All Souls will always have a special place in my heart.
