October 13, 2019: A Season of Special Sundays

by Father Jadon

For the next three Sundays we welcome special guests and celebrate new efforts that need our collective support and attention. I hope you will make plans to be in church each of these weeks and come to the 10 a.m. adult forum, even if that’s not your usual practice. All of this leads us to a very special Sunday, November 3rd, when we will celebrate a combined 10 a.m. Mass for the Feast of All Saints and Souls, followed by a festive all-parish pot-luck. It’s a busy season at All Souls!

This Sunday we welcome scouts and families from Scouts BSA Troop 248, a scout troop for girls founded here at the beginning of the year. Starting a troop is no small undertaking; countless hours have been contributed by adult leaders who are passionate about sharing their love of scouting and its countless life and leadership skills. Starting a troop requires both “start up” and ongoing financial investment to buy equipment and ensure that participation in the troop is accessible to all girls, regardless of their family’s finances. While all our scout families pay dues and activity fees, the troop was founded with the idea that fundraising should not take up a large amount of the troop’s time. Once a year we are asking for contributions to support the troop. This Sunday members of the church and troop will come together as one All Souls family.

Next Saturday and Sunday we will welcome Bishop Griselda Delgado del Carpio as we raise awareness and funds for our partner parish in Santa Clara, Cuba. This church, closed for more than a decade, is being readied to reopen through the efforts of the local community and through financial contributions from us. In early 2020, we will make our next trip to visit our Cuban siblings in Christ.

On Sunday, October 27, we will welcome the Reverend Doctor Noelle York-Simmons, 28th Rector of historic Christ Church Alexandria. Both a good friend of mine and a passionate stewardship preacher, Noelle will help us formally launch our annual pledge campaign.

I hope you can take part in all these celebrations! While every Sunday is special, the next four Sundays are particularly so. Together they promise to inspire us in myriad ways as we bring out of our treasure both what is new and what is old.
