October 27, 2019: What Does Abundant Life Look Like?

by Father Jadon

The late summer and early fall here at All Souls have overflowed with work and activities at the heart of our efforts to Care, Serve, and Grow together as a community of Jesus followers who embrace “traditional worship, progressive thinking.” In addition to the post-summer re-gathering of groups like our Parish Choir, the Women of All Souls, Men’s Fellowship, Wise and Mature, Poetry Night, and Education for Ministry we have also continued our Sunday Evening Yoga and Prayer offerings and launched a DC chapter for monthly, Eucharistic “Holy Hikes.” In addition to all that, in the last few weeks we have celebrated our annual Blessing of Animals, relaunched our Legacy Giving initiative, hosted the Dean of General Seminary for a regional alumni and friends luncheon, launched a new small groups program (more than fifty people have signed up!), started organizing a new round of Foyer Dinners (stay tuned for more info), planted a new front lawn and, in the background, finalized plans to restore one of the oldest sections of our historic stonework and worked to complete a major grant application to, potentially, make improvements to parts of our lower level and plant a small infant and toddler daycare program. Two Sundays ago we celebrated Scout Sunday, raising awareness and funds for the girls troop we founded earlier this year. Last weekend we hosted Bishop Griselda as part of our recently formed partnership to help reopen an Episcopal church in Santa Clara, Cuba. And Next Sunday we will come together for an all-parish celebration of the Feasts of All Saints and All Souls. And while undertaking all of this has stretched us in some ways, what I have seen is an increase in participation, and attendance, and an outpouring of excitement, generosity, and faithfulness.

Now, in the midst of all this incredible activity, it is also time for us to begin the annual gathering of pledges that fuel and fund the ministry of All Souls with the time, talent, and treasure that each of us has been given to steward faithfully. In the coming weeks we will hear more about how the ministry of this church family is making a difference and we will be asked to support it generously. As we consider how we are each being called to lean forward here at All Souls, financially and otherwise, let us see, embrace, and empower the attitude and Spirit of abundance that is already at work among us.
