November 10, 2019: The Blessings of Giving

By Greg Lebel, Junior Warden

“The Lord Jesus... himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35

As I think about my life, I realize how abundantly blessed I am in my personal, professional, and spiritual lives. God has blessed Glenn and me in so many ways! And my All Souls family is a large part of that bounty.

I’ve been blessed by the opportunities that this parish has offered to share God’s bounty in many and varied ways, enriching my spiritual life by, as St. Peter says, using whatever gifts we have to serve others (1 Peter 4:10). In the past few years, we have reached out to our larger community in ways that offer to share God’s bounty with so many!

We have helped a refugee family settle into a new life here in the United States. We’ve forged a strong cooperative ministry with a church in Cuba, and created a Scout troop that offers membership to any girl regardless of her family’s ability to afford the costs. We’ve given from our own abundance to our neighborhood as an election polling place, by actively sharing our lawn and gardens as a place of rest and refreshment, in our annual blessing of the animals, and even in a neighborhood Mardi Gras party. Our exploration of the possibility of offering a childcare program may put our building to better use in serving an unmet need in our part of the city. We continue to nurture and enhance the lives of the residents of Saint Mary’s Court through prayer, programs, and what is becoming our annual Christmas holiday visit to sing with and for them. In all of these ways and many more, we offer to share God’s blessings with others – to bring God’s unbounded generosity closer to many.

But these ministries also bring blessings into our own lives. In sharing God’s riches with others, we ourselves become a part of God’s bounty. We have not only experienced God’s abundance in our lives; we have become God’s bounty in the lives of others. This is the spirit of this place and, if we look, we see that spirit growing every day. What an abundance of blessings!
