May 5, 2019: Farewell from our Seminarian

by Martin Geiger

It’s hard to believe that it’s been two years since I began as the seminarian here at All Souls. My first Sunday with you feels at once like a very long time ago, and like it just happened.  In these last two years, I’ve learned so much about the life of this parish, and about my own skills and gifts as I prepare for ordained ministry. It’s hard to imagine Sunday without being here!

So the main thing I have to say as I say goodbye, and move on to the next thing, is thank you! Thank you for being the welcoming, curious, quirky people you are. From my first service here, I knew from the welcome I received (and from the copious use of incense!) that I had chosen the right place and the right people to learn from. Thank you for walking me home as I learned to preach, and for all the wonderful feedback you offered after each of my sermons. Thank you for your support as I led forums, worked with different ministries, and survived learning to chant! I’ve learned so much from all of you about what it means to follow Jesus together as a parish, and I’ll carry all of that with me as I move forward into my first call as a priest - wherever that is!

I’m particularly grateful for the gift of a stole, which I’ll be wearing as I’m ordained to the priesthood in June. I’m so glad to have something that represents my time at All Souls to carry with me into my new ministry, and I’m sure that I’ll remember my years here each time that I wear it.

Even as I wait to figure out where I am going next, I am so excited to hear what God will be doing in this place! As you continue your Easter celebration, my prayer is that all the joy and the hope of the Resurrection is with you, and continues to guide your life together!
