About our Director of Music

Robert Benjamin Hutchens II was named Director of Music at All Souls in March 2012.  At the church, he serves as organist,  conducts the semi-professional choir, and teaches music to children during as a part of the Sunday School program.  The parish choir performs muliple choral work in Mass each week and has recently invited to be the choir in residence at Exeter & Chester Cathedrals in the U.K. in July 2014.

Ben has served as director of music for churches for more than ten years.  In addition, he founded the Dei Laudes Choir in 2004: an auditioned choir of forty voices that has been invited to perform at prestigious venues across the United States and in Europe. Ben has served most recently as the organist/choirmaster at Epiphany Lutheran Church in Burtonsville, Maryland and as guest conductor of the Thomas Circle Singers in Washington.  In addition to his duties at All Souls, Ben is the Director of Vocal Studies at Georgetown Day School where he oversees a high choral program of more than 100 singers divided into 10 ensembles.  

He is a native of Statesville, North Carolina and holds degrees the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the Master of Music degree in violin performance from the University of Alabama and the Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Furman University.  He currently serves as president elect of the DC/MD Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association, is on the board of directors for the DC Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and is a part of the planning team for the 2014 National Conference for the Anglican Association of Musicians.  He is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Pi Kappa Lambda, and Alpha Epsilon Lambda.
