Here in Washington DC there are banners and placards about different positions all over the place. At All Souls, we wanted to design a banner to put in front of our church that would transcend any particular political ideology while still speaking into our present moment . . . living into our founding vision to be a "church for all souls."
The development of our sign coincided rather serendipitously with the sermon our presiding bishop, Michael Curry, offered the world at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, on May 19, 2018. "Love the neighbor you like and the neighbor you don't like," Bishop Curry preached, as many millions of people around the world were inspired by what Jesus named the second great commandment: "to love thy neighbor as thyself" (Mark 12:28-34 and Matthew 22:35-40).
We hope our banner helps amplify and spread this message and remind us all of the transformative power of love that Jesus taught and modeled. Our banner has now been shared over 100,000 times on Facebook and more than 700 signs & banners have been ordered by churches and individuals.
