From the Rector: Music at All Souls

“The one who sings, prays twice,” says Saint Augustine in one of his sermons. Though I have often misquoted that line, along with words attributed to Charles Wesley (you’re sure to hear them in one of my sermons) I love and believe Augustine’s claim. Singing feels especially like prayer when we sing together, or when the choir sings an anthem that seems to name the sentiment in the air, or when a psalm manages to articulate the prayer that’s buried too deeply for words. Much of my own memory of church has to do with music—with particular hymns, anthems, organ pieces and liturgical settings. Music has always been an enormous part of my prayer.

I begin this update on our search for a new Director of Music and Organist by talking about prayer because I want you to know how seriously I take this search, how deeply I am praying about it, and how carefully our committee is working. We formally advertised our position with the American Guild of Organists and with the Association of Anglican Musicians. This gave regional, national and international attention to our position, and we received inquiries and applications from every part of this country and received several applications from abroad. We have narrowed our search to four finalists.

As soon as schedules can be arranged, each of the finalists will be invited to interview, audition, and play our organ. Each candidate will also be asked to direct our volunteer
choir, assisted by four professional singers, since this will be the normal composition of our choir in the future. We look forward to seeing both the people skills of the candidates as well as their professional skills. A little like searching for a new rector, the search for a new musician involves looking for someone who is not only good at what she or he does, but also someone who seems to “fit” with the All Souls family.

Though there will be other times to say thank you, I want to begin here to say how much I appreciate all that Arthur Roach (“Artie,” to his church friends) has done and continues to
do for our choir. He is a great gift to us. Pray for Artie and our choir, and please pray for our search committee and candidates. –John Beddingfield

The Heifer Projectworks with communities around the world to end hunger and poverty and to care for the earth. Giving to this project works to “pass on the gift.” The families then share their animals’ offspring with others – along with their knowledge, resources, and skills. Join the children of All Souls for this Lenten project. On Palm Sunday, the children will bring their gift boxes in the procession. Visit the information table in the Undercroft to learn more about this great program.

Picture this. . . Do you ever see people in church and wonder what their names are? Have you ever heard an announcement regarding a member and wished you could put a face with a name? Are you new to All Souls Church and wish you had something to help you put names with faces? Well, help is on the way! We are producing a pictorial directory for our church. There is no cost to you or All Souls to have your photographs taken and you will receive a complimentary 8”X10” portrait and directory for participating. You will be able to view your images electronically immediately after you are photographed. At that time, you will have the opportunity to purchase additional portraits to share with family and friends. Select a time on either April 3rd, 4th or 5th by signing up on Sundays in the Undercroft or on the main our parish website.
Readings for the Daily Officecome from the lectionary in the back of the Book of Common Prayer. Psalms are traditionally read according to the headings in the Prayer Book corresponding to the day of the month. For example, the heading for Psalm 69 on Page 679 in the Prayer Book is, “Thirteenth Day: Evening Prayer,” which would be the psalm appointed for February 13 in the evening. In keeping with the rubrics on page 934, we read the Gospel in the morning. The readings listed in the Morning Prayer column below are those read at All Souls Tuesday through Friday at 7:15 a.m. The third reading may be added in the morning or read at Evening Prayer.
