From the Rector:  A CRESCENDO OF THANKS

As I watched part of the Papal Mass on Thursday, I could not help but notice the music.  While there were beautiful arrangements of hymns and anthems and wonderful service music, most of it was done for the people, if not at the people.  Most of those in attendance seemed to stand more as spectators than participants.  Soloist, after famous soloist, acted as cantor, sending (what I believe to be) a subtle message that one must have a larger-than-life voice in order to praise God.  I began to imagine how different the scene might be if we had 40,000 Episcopalians in an outdoor stadium singing hymns.  The sound would shake the stands, stop traffic, set off car alarms, and awaken people in three or four states.  This would be especially true if Arthur Roach directed the music.

Serving as our interim organist and director of music, Artie has charmed, encouraged, cajoled, wooed, badgered, coaxed, and inspired us all to sing.  He has helped many of us to find our voice, or to find it again.  Some who have not sung in choirs for years have stepped forward.  One person who used to worship at the Low Mass decided to lend her help and sing at High Mass.  Another who would prefer to sit in the pews pledged his support and promised to sing with the choir throughout the interim.

Artie has shared friends and colleagues with us and we have enjoyed some big, beautiful voices.  But even then, the soloists were infectious.  They made us want to sing even more, as exemplified at the end of Mass on Easter Day when just about everyone in the church joined in singing the Hallelujah Chorus.

Next Sunday, April 27, we will celebrate Arthur Roach at a special coffee hour in the Undercroft.  Please join us as we toast our friend Artie, as we thank him for his good ministry among us, and as we give thanks for the gifts of this interim period.

Change is inevitable.  We will welcome a new organist and director of music and some of our choir will return to their early Mass or favorite pew.  Eventually we will welcome a few professional singers to support the choir.  Some of us will love the changes and some will dislike them, but I pray that through it all, we might continue to grow in love, in charity, and in the worship of God.      John Beddingfield
