From the Rector:  Living out the Ascension

Forty days after Easter we celebrate Ascension Day. The first chapter of the Acts of the Apostles describes how Jesus speaks with his disciples, promises the coming of the Holy Spirit, and then is lifted up out of their sight. My favorite part of that scriptural passage is the appearance of the two angels who ask the dumbstruck disciples, “Why do you stand looking up toward heaven?”

The disciples stand and look, trying to understand what the Ascension might mean.  I commiserate with those disciples because I think I often do the spiritual equivalent of standing, looking, hesitating, and looking off into space.  I, too, sometimes wonder where God has gone and wait for God to come back and fix things.  This waiting affects my spirit and makes me cautious and hesitant.

I’m sometimes slow to forgive others because, at some level, I’m waiting for Jesus to forgive them for me. I don’t say “I’m sorry” because I hold on to the belief that at some point there will be some perfect moment, some exceptional time when it will feel “right” to apologize.

Perhaps others understand this spiritual waiting.  Sometimes we might hesitate to stop a habit or check an addiction or resist a recurring temptation, pretending that God will tell us when it’s really time to stop. Perhaps we wait for God’s hand to pick us up and put us in a new place rather than having to make difficult decisions ourselves, or we simply carry around in our pockets deep dreams and sacred secrets about what we might do, or what we might be, one day. Not today, but one day, in God’s good time.

The Ascension of our Lord asks us (among other things) “What are you waiting for? Why do you stand looking up toward heaven?” Jesus has ascended to the Father. A part of what that means is that now it’s our turn to heal, to feed, to love, to minister, to challenge, to grow, and to offer peace.  It’s our time to be the Body of Christ in the world. In these days after the Ascension, may we have joyful hearts that we might not just stand still looking into heaven, but that we, too, may ascend into the very heart of God’s love and mission.   John Beddingfield

Episcopal Relief and Development is ready to provide emergency assistance to families affected by tornadoes in Virginia, flooding in Mississippi, and fires in Los Angeles. At least 200 people were injured by three tornadoes that tore through southeastern Virginia last week.  To help people affected by fires and severe weather in Virginia and Mississippi, please make a donation to ERD’s “Emergency Relief Fund” online at http://www.er-d.org, or call 1-800-334-7626, ext. 5129 or by mail to: Episcopal Relief and Development “Emergency Relief Fund” P.O. Box 7058, Merrifield, VA 22116-7058.

A List of Eligible Voters . . . for parish elections at the Annual Meeting on May 18 is posted in the narthex and the Undercroft.  Please check the list and see that your name is included.  Though the official date for including names on this roster has passed, the Vestry can meet and add names if necessary.  If you are not listed on the posted roster, please contact the parish office.

Cookies for Children . . . During the month of May it will be our turn to provide cookies for the children at the Episcopal Center for Children.  Please bring homemade or store-bought cookies to the parish kitchen, make sure they are plainly marked, Episcopal Center for Children, and place them in the marked receptacle.  If you have questions please speak with Merriam Woodhouse.

When were you baptized? . . . In an effort to reconcile the parish records, we’re looking for baptism dates for many of our parishioners.  If you have a copy of your baptismal certificate, then that does the trick.  If you have a relative who remembers your baptism, then tell us about that, and we’ll figure out the date.  If you know that you were baptized but have no idea as to the particulars, then see Robin Jones in the Undercroft on Pentecost (May 11).  She will have a calendar and will invite you to find a feast day in your first year of birth, and we can call that your baptismal day.

At The Adult Forum this Sunday, May 4 at 10:00 a.m., “St. Luke’s House,” will be led by guests Carol Shreve and John Miers.  Come and learn about how in the early 1970s, a group of mental-health professionals and members of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church came together to support patients being discharged from institutions without much community support . . . The Adult Forum next Sunday, May 11 at 10:00 a.m., “Healing Ministries,” will be facilitated by Landis Vance.  In addition to her extensive experience in pastoral care and counseling, Landis has helped organize and nurture the healing ministry at All Souls.  Especially as Landis plans to move to Montana in the coming weeks, our forum provides us with an opportunity to receive some of her wisdom before she moves.

Readings for the Daily Office come from the lectionary in the back of the Book of Common Prayer.  Psalms are traditionally read according to the headings in the Prayer Book corresponding to the day of the month.
