A PARISH PICNIC

pic nic (pik' nik) Originally, a fashionable social entertainment in which each person present contributed a share of the provisions; now, a pleasure party including an excursion to some spot in the country where all partake of a repast out of doors: the participants may bring with them individually the viands and means of entertainment, or the whole may be provided by some one who "gives the picnic."
This is the way the Oxford English Dictionary defines “picnic.” While I don’t know what the Bishop would think if he were to hear that All Souls is having a “pleasure party” this Sunday, I do think he would approve of our parish picnic. Whether you prefer viands, victuals and libations, or just plain food and drink, it will be great fun to be together in Rock Creek Park.

Our picnic is on Trinity Sunday this year, and that is appropriate for several reasons.  First, Trinity Sunday is a celebration, and for us it will be the last day that our four professional section leaders sing with the choir until next fall.  The choir will sing the propers of the Mass at 11 a.m. to a setting by the Polish baroque composer Marcin Mielczewski.  The music will be accompanied by theorbo (a bass lute) and baroque cello.  I ask you, “When was the last time you heard a good lute?”

Trinity Sunday is also a day for thinking about what it means for God the Father to live and exist in community with the Son and the Holy Spirit.  Christian community and fellowship reflects the community enjoyed by God, and so, it’s a good day for us to practice fellowship, and in this case, to have a picnic.

And finally, it’s a good time for us to celebrate the ending of one season (choir, Sunday school, graduations, advancements to new grades, etc.) and to kick off the summer.

The parish picnic begins at
4 p.m. in Grove 10 of Rock Creek Park and will last until 7 p.m.  In the case of torrential rain or thunderstorms, we will be in the church undercroft.  Maps are available at church, or if you need a ride, call Charles Boone or email him at mbcc2@comcast.net.  John Beddingfield

An older parishioner of All Souls who lives in Woodley Park needs occasional help with shopping and running errands.  If you have a car and an hour or two, please contact the parish office for details.  This is a great opportunity to make a new friend (or deepen an existing friendship) and to be of tremendous help.

Capital Pride . . . Please mark you calendars for Capital Pride on Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14.  Plan to march with the All Souls contingent (and Bishop Chane!) in the Capital Pride Parade on Saturday evening, June 13.  We are planning an activity after the parade.  On Sunday, June 14, we will be helping to staff the Diocesan Booth at the Pride Festival, where we will be actively inviting people to visit All Souls and get to know the Episcopal Church.  For questions or to volunteer call Dale Lewis at (703)960-3502 or email him at DALEALEWIS@aol.com.

The Rector attends CREDO . . . From June 12 through June 22 Father Beddingfield will participate in the CREDO conference at Bishop’s Ranch Conference Center in Healdsburg, California. The conference provides clergy with the means to explore and deepen in four primary areas: spiritual, physical, vocational, and financial. Participants are selected at random from all active clergy with more than one year in the Pension Fund and the Fund pays for most of the cost. Father Beddingfield will join approximately 30 other clergy (including former parishioner, now priest, Father Dan Gross) in the conference. During their time, participants will meet in plenary sessions, small groups, and private consultations with faculty members. For the several months leading up to the conference, Father Beddingfield has been working through the pre-conference materials and surveys that focus on personal and professional wellness. Some parishioners have been involved in the surveys as well. Through this discernment and visioning process, and with the help of a faculty team of professionals, each participant builds a CREDO plan, which is a personal covenant based on his or her CREDO work and a formal expression of the experiences. This plan provides a personal baseline and strategy for growth and faithfulness into the future.
