Celebrating All Saints and All Souls

Traditionally the Church celebrates All Saints’ Day on November 1, or transfers the celebration to the next Sunday. This year is especially celebrative in that November 1 falls on a Sunday and God will make a brand new saint in our midst as we baptize Jude Rowan McClain. On this day we remember all the great saints of the church and we give thanks that we, too, are called to live into God’s family of saints in eternal life.

All Souls’ Day is traditionally celebrated the day after All Saints’, November 2. On this day, we especially remember the saints we have known and loved, those who have died and joined the Communion of Saints. The mood is more reflective and introspective. This year we are particularly blessed to have the choir sing the settings of the Mass by Joan Brudieu (ca. 1520–1591). After communion and the usual blessing, the choir sings In paradisum while the priest and acolytes process to the columbarium.  The words are sung in Latin but are translated as

May choirs of angels lead you to Paradise on high,

where dwell the white-robed martyrs who now no more can die.

And at your coming thither may you be brought by them

into the holy city, God’s true Jerusalem.

As angels gave poor Lazarus from all his ills release,

so may they give you welcome to everlasting peace.

The columbarium is then blessed with a prayer (which extends beyond our own little space and time to also include all of those who we have loved and who have died) and then they choir sings a final kyrie, just before the dismissal.

At both Masses on All Saints’ Sunday and at the All Souls’ Mass on Monday, we follow the old tradition of praying aloud the names of our beloved who have died. It is with joy, with thanksgiving, and with faith that we offer our celebrations in the spirit of the Collect of the Day for All Saints’, which captures well the intention of these days: “Grant us grace so to follow thy blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys which thou has prepared for those who unfeignedly love thee.” John Beddingfield

Adult Forum on Interfaith Dialogue . . . On Sunday, November 1, we continue our discussion of interfaith dialogue and issues arising from conversations with those who understand God differently from us. Please join us at 10 a.m. in the undercroft.

Stewardship 2010
. . . Pledge forms have been mailed to parishioners and extra pledge forms can be found in the back of the church and in the undercroft.  Often, when Jesus explains the
kingdom of God, he uses the image of something that begins small and grows beyond all recognition.  The kingdom of God is grown by small things like mustard seeds and particles of yeast.  But the kingdom of God in our day is also grown by small things like dollars and pledge forms, time volunteered, and people helped.  The kingdom of God grows through individual efforts offered together in community.  God’s kingdom grows as we grow in generosity. Please prayerfully consider your offering to God through All Souls.

Centering Prayer Group
. . . On Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. a handful of people gather in the church for silent prayer.  If you’re new to Centering Prayer, and would like a brief introduction, please join us at 6:50 p.m. Both the main church door and the Woodley Place door will be unlocked.
