WHAT IF?

There’s a contemporary Christian song on the radio by Nicole Nordeman that gets me thinking whenever I hear it.  The song begins with the singer imagining a conversation with a friend who doesn’t have much time for Jesus or the Christian faith.  “What if you’re right,” she sings, “and [Jesus] was just another nice guy . . . What if you’re right, and they say the cross will only make a fool of you? . . .  What if he takes his place with all the prophets and kings who taught us love and came in peace, but then the story ends, what then?”

The music continues, but there’s a slight shift in the chords.  The mood changes and the conversation goes in a new direction:

But what if you're wrong? What if there's more?
What if there's hope you never dreamed of hoping for?
What if you jump? And just close your eyes?
What if the arms that catch you, catch you by surprise?
What if He's more than enough? What if it's love?

The song always leaves me wondering if there are ways that I am limiting God.  Am I expecting too little of God?  Are my prayers too timid or doubtful?  Do I expect too little of myself, or of our parish, or of our community?  What if?

This month we are asking all of our parishioners and friends to pray about their commitment to God and their commitment to God’s people in this particular place, All Soul’s parish.  What if we were a parish that gave of itself sacrificially?  What if we were a people who imagined doing great things for the glory of God?  What if we were people who were willing to do whatever it might take in order to invite others into the love of God?

Most of the people who will read this newsletter know, like the second part of the song,  that there is MORE. There is love, there is joy, there is beauty.  And there is hope, and if we close our eyes and jump, then there is not only God to catch us, but there are also a lot of people in this community who are there to help catch us.  What if our commitment grows to match our faith?  What if?  John Beddingfield
