THANKFUL FOR MUSIC

Whether it’s the tune for the Anglican chant, a musical phrase from a motet, or a particularly memorable hymn, these tunes linger in my head.  When I recall particular music, it becomes like prayer—it reminds me of the context in which I heard the music, the people who were making it, and the people who joined me in worship. I think of that phrase often attributed to St. Augustine that, “those who sing, pray twice.” What Augustine actually said, in a commentary on Psalm 73 was more involved:

The one who sings praise, not only praises, but also praises joyfully; the one who sings praise, not only sings, but also loves Him for whom he sings. In the praise by one who confesses the Divine Being, praise actually is a public profession; and in the song of the lover is affection for the Beloved." CCL 39 [The translation is by a writer at Beliefnet, http://community.beliefnet.com/edinmiami.]

Something special happens when our prayers are turned into song. This is one reason why so much of our liturgy involves singing and chanting.  It deepens our worship and provides additional opportunities for the tunes to linger within us.

Trinity Sunday marks the end of our official choir season, though some of the choir members will join us through the summer.  A special thanks is owed to our four section leaders, Ellen Kliman, Melissa Kornacki, David Arbury, and Ryan Lewis.  Christine Hagan has often volunteered to accompany.  Our regular volunteers continue to be the backbone of our music program and our own
Philip Cave has continued to stretch us, surprise us, teach us, and lead us. We are extremely grateful to all of those who have helped us sing God’s praise, and in so doing, have deepened our prayer this year.  John Beddingfield
